WHEREAS, the 2010 I.C. Norcom High School boys' basketball team from Portsmouth capped an outstanding season by winning its first Virginia High School League Group AAA state basketball championship on March 12, 2010; and WHEREAS, after defeating Chantilly High School in the semifinals, the I.C. Norcom High School boys' basketball team (25 - 4) went on to defeat previously unbeaten Petersburg High School before an enthusiastic crowd of 7,500 at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center; and WHEREAS, the Greyhounds trailed by 10 points with seven minutes 48 seconds left in the game but managed to come within one point of Petersburg High School with three minutes 52 seconds left; and WHEREAS, fans from both teams were on the edge of their seats when, with 1.5 seconds left in the game, reserve Shelton Haskins scored, leading the Greyhounds to a triumphant 55 - 54 victory over Petersburg High School; and WHEREAS, the I.C. Norcom High School boys' basketball team's victory marked the second consecutive year that a team from the South Hampton Roads area won the Group AAA state basketball title; and WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2010 Greyhounds is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Coach Leon Goolsby and his staff; and the support of the parents, student body, faculty, and leadership under Principal Lynn Briley of I.C. Norcom High School; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the I.C. Norcom High School boys' basketball team hereby be commended for its Group AAA state championship win; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Leon Goolsby as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for the team's outstanding season and championship performance. |
