WHEREAS, WTJU, a community radio station of the University of Virginia dedicated to bringing people together through music and conversation, has greatly served the Charlottesville and Albemarle County communities for many years; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1955 by the University of Virginia's Department of Speech and Drama and airing for the first time in 1957, WTJU began as an educational radio station featuring classical music and has broadened its musical programming over the years to include jazz, folk, rock, blues, and hip-hop; and
WHEREAS, WTJU became a student organization independent from the Department of Speech and Drama in 1963 and has been under direct oversight of the University of Virginia since 1993, when the station hired its first paid staff member, general manager Chuck Taylor, who would guide the station until his retirement in 2010; and
WHEREAS, WTJU's operations today also include student radio station WXTJ 100.1 FM, the Virginia Audio Collective podcasts, CharlottesvilleClassical.org, and a variety of educational programs; and
WHEREAS, WTJU regularly sponsors shows at venues in Charlottesville, including Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar and the Jefferson Theatre, and often hosts live on-air sets by local bands; and
WHEREAS, WTJU has become an integral part of the Charlottesville community over its history, helping to make the city a wonderful place to live, work, and tune in; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That WTJU hereby be commended for its legacy of service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to WTJU as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the station's contributions to Charlottesville and the Commonwealth.
