WHEREAS, the Varina High School boys' basketball team finished a stellar season with the best overall record in school history and a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 5 state championship; and
WHEREAS, in preparation for the 2017 - 2018 season, the Varina High School Blue Devils set out their goals and aspirations in a "code of excellence" and motivated each other during skill-development sessions, conditioning and strength training, and team camps at Guilford College in North Carolina and other institutions; and
WHEREAS, the Varina Blue Devils were undefeated against public schools, swept district-rival Highland Springs High School, and went on an impressive 22-game winning streak to close out the season with a 26 - 2 record; and
WHEREAS, in the state final on March 8, 2018, the Varina Blue Devils came from behind to defeat the Wakefield High School Warriors by a score of 64 - 60; and
WHEREAS, four Varina Blue Devils were named as all-region selections, four were named as all-academic selections, and three members of the team were offered college basketball scholarships; and
WHEREAS, the Varina Blue Devils were also successful off the court, with more than half the team making the school's honor roll and four members of the team achieving a GPA of 3.3 or higher, including a 3.9 and a 3.98; and
WHEREAS, the Varina Blue Devils' successful season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the passionate support of the entire Varina community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Varina High School boys' basketball team hereby be commended on winning the Virginia High School League Class 5 state championship in 2018; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Andrew Lacey, head coach of the Varina High School boys' basketball team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for the future.
