Celebrating the life of George G. Brown.

WHEREAS, George G. Brown, an esteemed educator and education administrator, devoted family man, accomplished runner, and active and beloved member of the Richlands community, died on July 27, 2024; and
WHEREAS, George Brown graduated from Richlands High School in 1970 before earning degrees from Southwest Virginia Community College in 1972, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1974, and the University of Virginia in 1986; and
WHEREAS, in 1974, George Brown began a half-century long career dedicated to the education of young people as a junior high school teacher and two years later he became a member of the first instructional staff to serve at Richlands Middle School; and
WHEREAS, George Brown transitioned to Richlands High School in 1980 and over two decades supported the growth and development of his students as an educator and coach in multiple sports and later as an assistant principal and principal for nearly 15 years; and
WHEREAS, from 2005 to 2019, George Brown guided Tazewell County Public Schools in various leadership capacities, including as director of secondary education and career and technical education, assistant superintendent, and division superintendent; and
WHEREAS, George Brown was a passionate and indefatigable runner who ran every day for a remarkable 15,921 consecutive days, the longest active streak in the Commonwealth at the time of his death and the 25th longest active streak nationally; and
WHEREAS, George Brown ran competitively in more than 50 marathons in his lifetime, including the marathons in Boston, New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and San Diego; he was especially adept at ultramarathons, winning the 50-mile Mount Masochist Trail Run in 1986 and 1987 and placing 14th in the prestigious Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Run in 2001 after finishing the race in just over 24 hours; and
WHEREAS, from 1975 to 2009, George Brown gave generously of his time officiating high school basketball and football as a member of the Appalachian Officials Organization; and
WHEREAS, George Brown will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Lynne; his son, Glayde, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of George G. Brown, a treasured member of the Richlands community whose integrity, compassion, and dedication inspired all who knew him; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George G. Brown as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
