WHEREAS, Garland Waddy Garrett, a United States Navy veteran, businessman, and respected member of the Richmond community, died on April 2, 2018; and
WHEREAS, born in Richmond, Waddy Garrett has deep roots in Virginia, with his family tracing back to colonial settlers in the 1620s and ties with Benjamin Franklin; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and the United States Naval Academy; after submarine school and nuclear power training, he served as an officer aboard three submarines over the course of his 10-year military career, retiring with the rank of lieutenant commander; and
WHEREAS, after completing his education at Harvard Business School, Waddy Garrett became chief executive officer of Alliance Fertilizer Corporation, which had been owned by his family since the 1920s; and
WHEREAS, under Waddy Garrett's leadership, the company expanded from three plants in Virginia to 12 locations in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina; after his well-earned retirement from the company in 2000, he continued to offer his expertise to numerous businesses and organizations; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett served as a member of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, as well as the director of several community banks; he relished opportunities to mentor and inspire young entrepreneurs; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett was an avid sailor who passed along his love of the water to his children and grandchildren; he and his wife, Connie, sailed more than 50,000 miles, from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was also active with the congregation of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett brought joy to others with his easy smile, zest for life, and unparalleled generosity; he never met a stranger and touched countless lives in personal and professional settings; and
WHEREAS, Waddy Garrett will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 44 years, Connie; his children, Christopher Garland, Caroline Bache, and Leete Parker, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Garland Waddy Garrett, a respected businessman and a highly admired member of the Richmond community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Garland Waddy Garrett as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
