Celebrating the life of Linda Burrell Porter.

WHEREAS, Linda Burrell Porter, a dedicated health care provider and a vibrant member of the Hampton community, died on May 19, 2024; and
WHEREAS, born in Newport News in 1942, Linda Porter graduated from the former George P. Phenix High School in Hampton, where she was a drum majorette, then continued her education at the former Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville; and
WHEREAS, over the course of her career, Linda Porter was a licensed practical nurse for the Veterans Administration and a registered nurse, charge nurse, and licensed practical nurse for several units at what was then known as Dixie Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Linda Porter taught charting to licensed professional nursing students, served on a committee to develop nursing care plans at the hospital, revised job distribution programs for licensed professional nurses at the hospital, and was responsible for quality assurance audits, among other duties; and
WHEREAS, Linda Porter also worked at what is now the Coliseum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and conducted private nursing duties for homebound patients; and
WHEREAS, Linda Porter served as a Girl Scout leader and gave back to her community by supporting local high school bands, majorettes, and cheerleading teams; she donated generously to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the March of Dimes, and she provided Christmas gifts for children in need through the Hampton University Student Christian Association; and
WHEREAS, Linda Porter helped preserve local history by participating in a documentary about Bay Shore Beach, the Commonwealth's only seaside resort for the Black community during the Segregation era and a popular destination for Black families up and down the east coast; and
WHEREAS, outside of her career and community service, Linda Porter enjoyed writing poetry and knitting baby blankets for family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Linda Porter will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters, Johnnell, Pamela, and Stephanie, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Linda Burrell Porter, a former nurse and an active community leader who touched countless lives in Hampton; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Linda Burrell Porter as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
