WHEREAS, UnidosUS, the largest Latino advocacy organization in the United States, has promoted unity and civic engagement among Latino communities for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, established in 1968, UnidosUS was known as the National Council of La Raza until 2017, when the name was changed to better reflect the organization's mission; and
WHEREAS, UnidosUS works with a network of more than 300 community-based affiliate organizations to break down social and economic barriers that affect Latinos throughout the nation and empower members of the community to achieve their fullest potential; and
WHEREAS, UnidosUS advocates for immigration reform, voter registration, fair and nondiscriminatory practices, and equitable health care, and it works with its affiliates to promote best practices in nonprofit management, leadership development, and issue-specific networking; and
WHEREAS, UnidosUS provides education, job training, career advancement, and youth leadership programs as well as seminars on homeownership, consumer protection, and retirement planning; and
WHEREAS, in its 50-year history, UnidosUS has invested more than $2 billion in community development, helped extend minimum wage laws to more than two million home care workers, enabled more than 30,000 people to buy their own home, and saved 90,000 families from foreclosure, among many other achievements; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That UnidosUS hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 2018; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to UnidosUS as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's achievements on behalf of Latino communities in the Commonwealth and the United States.
