Commending Pat Woodbury.

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury, a devoted educator and proactive community leader, served the residents of Newport News as a member of the Newport News City Council for 16 years; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of The College of William & Mary, Pat Woodbury was a certified school psychologist and a longtime professor at Hampton University, where she educated future teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Pat Woodbury ran for and was elected to the Newport News City Council, representing the Central District; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury supported numerous initiatives that enhanced the quality of life in the city, including programs that revitalized the East End and expanded affordable housing options; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury voted to adopt a five-year capital improvements plan that focused on development in Downtown Newport News and the City Center at Oyster Point, as well as the rehabilitation of public housing through the Choice Neighborhoods program; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury oversaw renovations at Warwick High School, including the acquisition of new school buses and HVAC roof units, the construction of new court rooms and libraries, and a refurbishment of Stoney Run Park; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury was a champion for environmental causes and led efforts to have solar panels installed on local public schools and city buildings; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury coordinated with officials from other cities in the region and members of the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads to study and allocate transportation costs; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her work on the Newport News City Council, Pat Woodbury had served on the Hampton Roads Transit Board of Commissioners since 2008 and the Virginia Municipal League Executive Committee since 2012; and

WHEREAS, Pat Woodbury served the residents of Newport News and the Commonwealth with the utmost dedication, integrity, and distinction and looks forward to seeking new opportunities to serve her community after her retirement from public office; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Pat Woodbury hereby be commended on the occasion of her retirement as a member of the Newport News City Council; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pat Woodbury as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her legacy of achievements on behalf of the Newport News community.
