HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 91
Celebrating the life of Joe Morris Lucas.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 12, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Joe Morris Lucas of Blacksburg, a longtime member of the Virginia Tech Police Department and a hardworking farmer who was well known in the agricultural sector for his purebred Angus cattle, died on January 8, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas was born in Giles County and subsequently graduated from Blacksburg High School, where he was a standout athlete; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas continued his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and studied agriculture; he began his career with ElectroTech, Inc., then returned to his alma mater as a member of the Virginia Tech Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas worked diligently to serve and protect students, faculty, and staff and retired with the rank of sergeant after 25 years of outstanding service; he considered his fellow members of the department as his second family and enjoyed attending annual reunions for years after his well-earned retirement; and

WHEREAS, outside of his law-enforcement career, Joe Lucas established Lucas Farm and grew the business from a few head of cattle to a statewide leader in high-quality brood stock; he was a member of the American Angus Association and the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas earned many awards and accolades for his contributions to agriculture and he proudly mentored many young people who worked on his farm, imparting his sense of duty and impeccable work ethic to new generations of community leaders; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Price's Fork Community Church, and he was a member of Hunters Masonic Lodge No. 156 in Blacksburg; and

WHEREAS, Joe Lucas will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Wanda; his children, David, Timmy, and Amy, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joe Morris Lucas, a dedicated law-enforcement officer and successful farmer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joe Morris Lucas as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
