WHEREAS, Kenbridge Emergency Squad has safeguarded the members of the Lunenburg County community for 50 years; and WHEREAS, in 1965, a group of concerned citizens established Kenbridge Emergency Squad to better serve their fellow residents; they trained with first responders in nearby communities and the Virginia State Police; and WHEREAS, Kenbridge Emergency Squad was in the process of fundraising for a new ambulance when Edward J. Silverman suggested holding a race with proceeds benefiting the squad; the race became known as the Jackass Derby and has been a popular local tradition since its inception; and WHEREAS, in 1966, Kenbridge Emergency Squad purchased its first vehicle and completed its first station one year later; the squad later purchased a carryall ambulance to comply with state regulations and continually expanded its fleet of ambulances over the next several years; and WHEREAS, the Ladies Auxiliary of Kenbridge Emergency Squad also formed in the 1960s; in addition to raising funds to help pay for equipment, the members of the auxiliary completed Red Cross first aid training to assist squad members when necessary; and WHEREAS, Kenbridge Emergency Squad worked with the local fire department in the 1980s to procure a heavy-duty rescue truck, which could carry a variety of lifesaving equipment and first aid supplies; the squad purchased its first box-type ambulance in 1990; and WHEREAS, in 1996, Kenbridge Emergency Squad established a junior squad, which later donated $2,000 toward the construction of a modern station; the new station features innovative equipment to ensure that the Kenbridge Emergency Squad is able to continue providing exceptional service to the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Kenbridge Emergency Squad hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kenbridge Emergency Squad as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for its contributions to the Lunenburg County community. |
