WHEREAS, Sunshine R. Huggins, a musical prodigy and student at Smithfield High School, was named the Inaugural Miss Juneteenth Virginia Queen in 2023 and Miss Juneteenth USA for 2023-2024; and
WHEREAS, Sunshine Huggins is an accomplished harpist who taught herself the instrument and cultivated a love for playing the harp from a young age; and
WHEREAS, Sunshine Huggins has performed on numerous occasions before prominent individuals and organizations, as well as local historical and community groups, making important contributions to the arts and culture of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Sunshine Huggins strives to use her musical gifts, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, to bring a sense of peace, joy, and tranquility to her listeners; and
WHEREAS, guided by her life's motto, "I am the product of my ancestors' wildest dreams," Sunshine Huggins has steadfastly devoted herself to fulfilling her grandest artistic and professional ambitions; and
WHEREAS, Sunshine Huggins is an honor roll student at Smithfield High School and plans to pursue a major in music therapy and a certification as a surgical technician at Norfolk State University after she graduates in 2024; and
WHEREAS, Sunshine Huggins has demonstrated a deep commitment to the betterment of society through her involvement with organizations dedicated to women's empowerment and environmental stewardship; and
WHEREAS, with a passion for both healing and uplifting others through her music and good deeds, and embracing and celebrating her African American heritage, Sunshine Huggins has embodied the values of the Miss Juneteenth pageant and is an inspiration to all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Sunshine R. Huggins for being named the Inaugural Miss Juneteenth Virginia Queen and the reigning Miss Juneteenth USA for 2023-2024; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sunshine R. Huggins as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her achievements and best wishes in her future endeavors.
