SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 168
Celebrating the life of Hale Hunter Hepler.

WHEREAS, Hale Hunter Hepler of Millboro in Bath County, a former member of the Bath County Electoral Board and beloved civic leader, died on January 13, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler was born on June 7, 1917, into the large and loving family of William Brown and Hattie Goddin Hepler; he was the last of ten sisters and three brothers; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler graduated from Millboro High School and was accepted at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, but the death of his mother and the advent of the Great Depression sent him into the workforce; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler left Bath County to serve his country in the United States Army during World War II as a member of Company C, 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion; he served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern theatres and was a Purple Heart recipient; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking and valued employee, Hunter Hepler worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 21 years before going with BARC Electric Co-op, where he worked until his retirement in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler did not slow down in retirement; he maintained an active life volunteering at the food pantry and Meals on Wheels, serving on the Bath County Electoral Board, and helping in the local Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler enjoyed spending time with his numerous friends and acquaintances, many of whom he met through membership in the Millboro Masonic Lodge No. 28, the Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter No. 24, and Windy Cove Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, a well-known figure in Bath County, Hunter Hepler worked diligently throughout his life to help those around him and make Millboro and Bath County a better place to live; and

WHEREAS, Hunter Hepler will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his children, Pam, David, Becky, Sam, and K.C., and their spouses; his loving grandchildren; and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated and beloved civic leader and public servant, Hale Hunter Hepler; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Hale Hunter Hepler as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
