SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 173
Celebrating the life of Alfred P. Dennis.

WHEREAS, Alfred P. Dennis, a former diplomat and realtor of Loudoun County, died on September 23, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis was born on March 27, 1915, to Mary Value Dennis and Alfred Pearce Dennis, a noted economist, diplomat, and college professor; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis attended Blair Academy and received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University; his graduate studies at the University of Chicago were cut short by World War II; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis proudly served his country during World War II as a naval communications officer in the 7th Fleet in the Pacific; he rose to the rank of lieutenant and played a role in the logistics of preparing for General MacArthur's invasion of the Philippines; and

WHEREAS, immediately following the war, Alfred Dennis was stationed in Munich, Germany, where he helped process the claims of those who had lived through the Nazi regime and claimed to be United States citizens; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis was then assigned to Oslo, Norway, where he met the love of his life, Eeda; they enjoyed a long and happy marriage and raised a wonderful family together; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis's career with the State Department took him and his family to various locations around the world, including Italy, Iceland, Cameroon, and Somalia; he functioned as acting ambassador in Somalia and in all his positions represented the United States with great grace and wisdom; and

WHEREAS, upon retiring, Alfred Dennis moved to Loudoun Coun ty, where he became a realtor and pursued his passions of architectural and historic preservation through involvement with several preservation groups in the area; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis was a member of the Piedmont Environmental Council, Loudoun Restoration and Preservation Society, and Preservation Society of Loudoun County; he also served on the board of Oatlands, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis worked to raise funds for the completion of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and the former home of General George C. Marshall, Dodona Manor; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis and his wife also placed their own beloved 125-acre Sage Hill estate, a site filled with considerable Civil War history, under conservation easement; and

WHEREAS, Alfred Dennis will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his loving wife, Eeda; his children, Alfred, René, and John, and their families; and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a noted diplomat and outstanding Virginian, Alfred P. Dennis; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Alfred P. Dennis as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
