SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 18 Celebrating the life of Robert Ward Armstrong. Agreed to by the Senate, January 14, 2010 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 22, 2010

WHEREAS, Robert Ward Armstrong of Bassett, a beloved citizen and community leader, died on June 21, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Robert Ward "Bob" Armstrong was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 3, 1913, the son of J.V. "Jay" Armstrong and Katherine Misse Armstrong; and

WHEREAS, Bob Armstrong received an associate degree from Highland Junior College in Highland, Kansas, and a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Kansas; and

WHEREAS, after college, Bob Armstrong worked for York Air Conditioning Company from 1936 to 1940, and during World War II, he worked for the DuPont Company as head of the purchasing department for special construction projects in locations throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, in 1947, Bob Armstrong served as the hardworking general manager of Ferrum Veneer Corporation, and when the company merged with Stanley Furniture, he headed the supply division until his retirement in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Bob Armstrong was a faithful member and deacon of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, taught Sunday School for more than 50 years and was superintendent of the Sunday School, as well as participated in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, always eager to serve his community in any way he could, Bob Armstrong was a longtime member of the Bassett Rotary Club and served as a member of the board of First National Bank of Ferrum until the bank merged with BB&T; and

WHEREAS, Bob Armstrong was very supportive of young people as a leader of the Bassett High School and Campbell Court Elementary School Parent Teacher Organizations and as a member of the Virginia Military Institute Parents' Council and the Board of Associates of Averett College; and

WHEREAS, an honorable and loving family man, Bob Armstrong will be fondly remembered for his fine sense of humor and generous nature and greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Susan Armstrong; his two sons, Judge R. Morgan Armstrong and Delegate Ward L. Armstrong and their wonderful families, especially his three grandchildren, Rob, Courtney, and Whitney; and his numerous good friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Robert Ward Armstrong; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Ward Armstrong as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
