WHEREAS, Sharon Dravvorn, an outstanding mathematics teacher at Woodbridge Senior High School, has been honored as a recipient of a 2009 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and WHEREAS, Teacher Magazine describes the coveted Milken Educator Awards as "the Oscars of Teaching" because of their prestige and importance to educators over the last two decades; and WHEREAS, established in 1985, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards recognize elementary and secondary school teachers, principals, and administrators who promote excellence and innovation in public education; and WHEREAS, without their knowledge, exemplary educators throughout the United States are considered by a blue-ribbon panel appointed by each state's department of education for the unrestricted financial award of $25,000; the financial awards are distributed in the spring during the Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference; and WHEREAS, prior to the start of the school year, Sharon Dravvorn studies the test scores and academic data of each incoming class and tailors the program to the needs of her students; she takes a special interest in those students who failed their eighth grade Standards of Learning Assessment; and WHEREAS, an innovative teacher, Sharon Dravvorn uses a variety of techniques and tools in her classroom to engage her students, including music, logic games, and visual aids; and WHEREAS, Sharon Dravvorn encourages parents to be involved, meeting with them regularly to review expectations; she also mentors new teachers and conducts countywide training courses; and WHEREAS, Sharon Dravvorn received a bachelor's degree from James Madison University and a master's degree from George Mason University; she has been named Woodbridge Senior High School Educator of the Year twice and was a finalist for the Washington Post's Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards; and WHEREAS, committed to excellence, Sharon Dravvorn is a worthy recipient of a 2009 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Sharon Dravvorn on her well-deserved 2009 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sharon Dravvorn as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for her commitment to public education and the young people of Prince William County. |
