SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 211 Offered February 28, 2020 Designating June 29, in 2020 and in each succeeding year, as Virginia Day. ---------- Patron-- Hashmi ---------- Unanimous consent to introduce ---------- Referred to Committee on Rules ----------

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia holds a unique place of distinction in the history of the United States and in the struggle for human rights, civil liberties, representative democracy, and self-determination; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is blessed with majestic natural wonders, precious historic resources, exquisite cultural treasures, premier educational institutions, and unbounded economic opportunity; and

WHEREAS, over the centuries, Virginia has gifted humanity some of the finest minds, noblest heroes, and greatest leaders the world has ever known; and

WHEREAS, it is proper and fitting that there be established an annual observance for the people of Virginia to unite in a spirit of fellowship for the purpose of honoring our beloved Commonwealth and her magnificent bounty; and

WHEREAS, this special occasion should be celebrated in every corner of the Commonwealth with fanfare and festivity, with triumph and jubilation, to inspire a sense of pride, patriotism, and goodwill among all Virginians; and

WHEREAS, on June 29, 1776, the Constitution of Virginia was adopted unanimously at the Fifth Virginia Revolutionary Convention, which formally dissolved all allegiances and political connection to Great Britain; and

WHEREAS, annually on June 29, the government of Virginia officially commemorates a new year of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate June 29, in 2020 and in each succeeding year, as Virginia Day; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Department of Political Science at Virginia Commonwealth University so that its faculty, students, and alumni may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this day on the General Assembly's website.
