WHEREAS, Jimmy and Sondra Garnett of Rice in Prince Edward County have helped preserve the history and heritage of the Commonwealth by transferring more than 623 acres of land to Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park; and WHEREAS, over a period of several years, Jimmy and Sondra Garnett demonstrated their dedication to the Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park and the preservation of the Commonwealth's historical treasures by transferring more than 623 acres of conservation easements to the care of Virginia State Parks; and WHEREAS, Sailor's Creek Battlefield was the site of one of the last battles of the war, and the Confederate defeat there factored heavily into General Robert E. Lee's decision to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865; and WHEREAS, the land provided by Jimmy and Sondra Garnett has ensured that more areas are open to the public and allowed for more complete interpretations of the three distinct engagements of the battles at Hillsman and Lockett Farms and Marshall's Crossroads; and WHEREAS, Jimmy and Sondra Garnett's efforts to preserve the Commonwealth's historic battlefields secure a lasting legacy for all Virginians; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jimmy and Sondra Garnett for transferring more than 623 acres of historically significant land to Virginia State Parks; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jimmy and Sondra Garnett as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for their generous contributions to preserving and protecting the history of the Commonwealth. |
