WHEREAS, the 2009 Chatham High School baseball team capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League Group A state baseball championship; and WHEREAS, the Chatham High School baseball team soundly defeated Gate City High School 10–4 at Radford University to take home the team's first state championship title since 1987; and WHEREAS, the Gate City Blue Devils took the lead early in the game but the Chatham Cavaliers answered with a three-run shot; and WHEREAS, Gate City High School scored again in the top of the third inning, but the Cavaliers took over from there and two RBIs in the seventh by Gate City could not stop the Cavaliers; and WHEREAS, the state championship win gave the Cavaliers a 25–2 record for the season and marked the conclusion of months of demanding training by the dedicated and hardworking players; and WHEREAS, pitcher Drew Kirks struck out 13 to lead the tenacious defense of the Chatham High School baseball team; he ended the year with an undefeated record; and WHEREAS, the players connected consistently with the ball to dominate Gate City during the championship game while each player—Tyler Younger, Gavin Hylton, Matt Bray, Drew Kirks, Gregory Doss, Joe Marsh, Beau Cassada, Brent Shelton, Jake Hardy, Cody Shelton, Drew Arnold, Travis Younger, and Bradley Haymes—strove to do his personal best and his part to bring home the state championship title; and WHEREAS, Head Coach Chad Anderson worked hard throughout the season to build the players' individual skills and fuse the young men into a cohesive and winning team; and WHEREAS, the outstanding success of the 2009 Chatham High School baseball team is due to the perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Chad Anderson, Assistant Coaches Whitt Farr, Daniel Rogers, Justin Brown, and Kyle Hoehne and scorekeeper Ashleigh Scolpini; and the support of the students, faculty, and parents of Chatham High School; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Cavaliers of Chatham High School as the 2009 Virginia High School League Group A state baseball champions; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Chad Anderson, head coach of the Chatham High School baseball team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's 2009 championship performance. |
