WHEREAS, Michael A. Jones retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia on October 1, 2009, after a long and exemplary career; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a graduate certificate from the National Criminal Justice Command College of the University of Virginia; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones began his outstanding law-enforcement career as a deputy sheriff for the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office and served briefly at Virginia Commonwealth University before joining the Division of Capitol Police, where he served from 1982 to 2007; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones represented the agency on a variety of committees and groups including serving as incident commander and principal security coordinator for the inaugurations of Governors Gilmore, Warner, and Kaine, where his attention to detail and commitment to excellence were evident; and WHEREAS, over the course of his service to the Capitol Police, Michael Jones served as chief investigator to the 1989 homicide on Capitol Square and project manager for the Capitol Police Ninth Street headquarters renovation; and WHEREAS, well-known in the law-enforcement community, Michael Jones is a frequent contributor to various publications; he also spoke at the National Conference of State Legislatures on securing state capitols after the September 11 attacks; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones is an active member of various professional organizations, including the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Legislative Services and Security Association of the National Conference of State Legislatures; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career in honor of his many accomplishments and devotion to service; and WHEREAS, Michael Jones proudly served the members of the legislature with great honor, integrity, and commitment to their safety; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Michael A. Jones for his outstanding law-enforcement career with the Division of Capitol Police; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael A. Jones as an expression of the General Assembly's respect and gratitude for his service at the Capitol complex. |
