SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 301
Celebrating the life of Leeser Boone Howell.

WHEREAS, Leeser Boone Howell, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and inspiring educator, died on December 21, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Carrsville, Leeser Howell developed a love of music at a young age that would bring her and others joy and become the central focus of her career; and

WHEREAS, an intelligent and gifted young woman, Leeser Howell was the salutatorian of her graduating class at Georgia Tyler High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, now Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, as an undergraduate, Leeser Howell was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was a charter member of the Epsilon Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; she also pursued graduate studies at Hampton Institute, now Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, a popular and effective teacher, Leeser Howell shared her love of music with her students as a teacher with Norfolk Public Schools for 23 years and as a private instructor, helping them gain an appreciation for music and develop their own musical talents; and

WHEREAS, Leeser Howell was the organist and choir director for First Church of Christ Holiness, St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, and the pianist at New Calvary Baptist Church; her musical training and experience ensured that services were accompanied by uplifting music of worship and praise; and

WHEREAS, Leeser Howell took great pride in her family, raising two children, and supporting her husband in his profession and public service, while enriching the lives of those with whom she came in contact with her musical talents, gracious manner, and compassionate heart; and

WHEREAS, Leeser Howell will be greatly missed by her husband of 49 years, Delegate Algie T. Howell, Jr.; children, Algie T. Howell III and Alesia Howell Clark, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of the Commonwealth, Leeser Boone Howell; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Leeser Boone Howell as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
