SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 446
Celebrating the life of Fred H. Scott.

WHEREAS, Fred H. Scott, a notable contributor to the dairy industry and Harrisonburg native, died on January 11, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Harrisonburg High School, Fred Scott earned his bachelor's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he received many leadership awards and was named in the Who's Who in American Colleges; and

WHEREAS, Fred Scott joined the former Augusta Dairies in Staunton in 1956 before he was promoted to plant manager in Winchester in 1967; and

WHEREAS, in 1981, Fred Scott returned to his hometown of Harrisonburg to assume the role of general manager of the Valley of Virginia Milk Co-Op., now known as Shenandoah's Pride Dairy; and

WHEREAS, prior to his retirement in 1998, Fred Scott played an instrumental role in orchestrating the move of Shenandoah's Pride Dairy from the facilities on Washington Street to the new White Wave facility in Mount Crawford; and

WHEREAS, Fred Scott served as a vocal advocate for the dairy science industry on the boards of the National Milk Producers Federation, the Virginia Dairy Products Association, and numerous state and local dairy organizations; and

WHEREAS, Fred Scott was admired for his active service in the community and for his contributions to the Harrisonburg Electric Commission, Rockingham County Development Corporation, and Shenandoah University; and

WHEREAS, committed to the principles of service to others, Fred Scott was an active member of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club, the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution, and First Presbyterian Church, where he gave his time and talents as a deacon, an elder, and a trustee; and

WHEREAS, Fred Scott embraced the joy in life as an avid Virginia Tech sports fan and globetrotting traveler with his wife, Polly; they traveled to Africa for their 50th wedding anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Fred Scott will be fondly remembered by Polly, his wife of 52 years; his two sons, Michael and Stuart; and his grandchildren, other family members, friends, and members of the Harrisonburg community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Fred H. Scott, notable contributor to the dairy industry; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Fred H. Scott as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
