WHEREAS, John Everett Reed, a retired business owner from Salem who took an active role in community affairs, passed away on December 5, 2012; and WHEREAS, a native of Indiana, John Reed spent his youth on a farm, developing a strong work ethic that would be evident throughout his life; and WHEREAS, John Reed proudly served his country in the United States Army and earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue University before teaching science on the high school level; and WHEREAS, John Reed drew upon his background in education and agriculture when he spent two years in Kisumu, Kenya, with his wife, Marlene; the couple provided invaluable assistance to local residents as he taught agriculture and she taught home economics; and WHEREAS, John Reed returned to the United States and embarked on a successful 20-year career in management and sales for Allis-Chalmers in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Virginia; and WHEREAS, in 1977, John Reed moved with his family to Roanoke and spent 20 years as the owner and operator of Curry Copy Center, taking pride in providing outstanding customer service; and WHEREAS, John Reed generously gave of his time and talents to a number of local community service organizations and churches and enriched the lives of countless individuals with his friendly manner and willingness to serve others; and WHEREAS, John Reed was also an active member of the Roanoke County Republican Committee; and WHEREAS, a talented craftsman, John Reed created beautiful and practical woodwork, stained glass and wrought iron pieces of art that graced the homes of family members and friends; and WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Marlene, John Reed will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Lucy; children, Greg, Teresa, and Judi, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, John Everett Reed; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Everett Reed as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
