SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 58
Celebrating the life of George Washington Warden, Sr.

WHEREAS, George Washington Warden, Sr., a respected citizen and retired business executive from Richmond, died on May 21, 2009; and

WHEREAS, George Warden, one of seven children, was born to loving parents Leonard and Sarah Warden on February 22, 1915, in Richmond, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, George Warden married the love of his life, Hilda, and they had two wonderful children, George and Ronald; and

WHEREAS, an industrious student, George Warden attended Van de Vyver Institute and Smith-Madden Business School, where he learned many of the fundamentals that he would apply during his long and successful career as a business executive; and

WHEREAS, a valued and dedicated employee, George Warden worked as the supervisor of janitorial services at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital before deciding to pursue his entrepreneurial inclinations as a full-time cab driver for Manhattan For Hire Car Corp.; and

WHEREAS, George Warden was quickly recognized for his leadership ability and business acumen and rose through the ranks of the company to become personnel manager in 1958, manager in 1959, and president in 1960; and

WHEREAS, a diligent and dedicated leader, George Warden presided over the company until retiring for the third and final time around 1990; he then enjoyed traveling, visiting with his grandchildren, and volunteering in the community; and

WHEREAS, George Warden shared his expertise and business experience as treasurer of the Virginia Taxicab Association and as former director of Consolidated Bank and Trust Company; he was also a member of the national and Richmond taxicab associations; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of Westwood Baptist Church, George Warden humbly served as a trustee for many years and was actively involved in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, George Warden leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 67 years, Hilda; son, George, and his wife, Sylvia, and their three children; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a respected businessman and outstanding Virginian, George Washington Warden, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Washington Warden, Sr.
