WHEREAS, Charles Columbus Bassett III of Martinsville, a respected and beloved citizen and outstanding businessman and community leader, died on May 14, 2009; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III was born in Henry County, the son of John E. "Ed" Bassett, Sr., and Ruby Williams Bassett, and the grandson of C.C. Bassett, one of the founders of Bassett Furniture Industries; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III honorably served his country in the United States Army for seven months beginning in 1957 and for over seven years in the active Army Reserves, attaining the rank of captain; and WHEREAS, an integral part of the operation of the family's furniture business, Charles Bassett III joined Bassett Furniture Industries in 1957 in production and quality control at the W.M. Bassett Plant in Martinsville, then worked as a salesman, and rose to become director of merchandising and design and later vice president; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III retired as a vice president of Bassett Furniture Industries in 1999 after an exemplary 43-year career with the company; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III gave his time and expertise to many community organizations over the years, including as a board member of the Bassett Mirror Company, Ferrum College, Carlisle School, Patrick Henry Community College, and Randolph-Macon College; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and WHEREAS, Charles Bassett III will be fondly remembered for his honesty and integrity and greatly missed by his devoted wife Ruth Jones Bassett and his wonderful family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Martinsville; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Charles Columbus Bassett III; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles Columbus Bassett III as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
