WHEREAS, the Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School girls' soccer team of Prince William County won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship at John Champe High School in Loudoun County on June 11, 2023; and
WHEREAS, the Colgan High School Sharks defeated the Battlefield High School Bobcats of Prince William County by a score of 1-0, bringing home the first state championship title in program history; and
WHEREAS, after several close misses and with six minutes remaining in regulation, the match remained scoreless when Colgan High School's Tiana Cruz stepped onto the pitch; one minute later, she headed a cross from Samantha Deguzman for the lone goal of the game; and
WHEREAS, the Colgan Sharks were propelled throughout the season by strong play on both sides of the ball, finishing the year with an extraordinary and historic record of 21-1-1; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Colgan Sharks is the result of the work ethic and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Colgan High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School girls' soccer team hereby be commended for winning the 2023 Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tom Warzywak, coach of the Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School girls' soccer team, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the team's achievements.
