WHEREAS, Kenneth Robert Krieger, one of the most successful coaches in the history of high school soccer in the Commonwealth and a beloved member of the Northern Virginia community, died on March 4, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth "Ken" Krieger graduated from Aberdeen High School in Maryland in 1972 before earning both a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Frostburg State University; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger embarked upon his illustrious coaching career at Osbourn Park High School in Prince William County and later started programs at C.D. Hylton High School and Forest Park High School, also of Prince William County, when those schools opened; and
WHEREAS, over his 30 seasons as a high school coach, Ken Krieger posted a 386-184-37 record, winning 14 district titles, nine region titles, four state titles, and two national championships; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger is fourth all-time among high school boys' soccer coaches in the Commonwealth and holds the unique distinction of being the first boys' soccer coach in Virginia to lead three different programs to the state tournament; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger was particularly dominant during his stint with the Hylton Bulldogs from 1992 to 2000, when he won four Group AAA state titles and two national championships and earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division I High School Coach of the Year honors in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger has coached and mentored many players who went on to enjoy success at the collegiate, professional, and national levels, including his daughter, Ali Krieger, who played for the United States women's national soccer team and Gotham Football Club of the National Women's Soccer League; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger has been credited with spearheading the evolution of high school soccer in the Commonwealth by promoting a more paced and tactical style of play that was innovative at the time; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger was inducted into the Virginia Youth Soccer Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his accomplishments as a coach; and
WHEREAS, Ken Krieger will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife, Alexandra; his children, Kyle and Ali, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Kenneth Robert Krieger, a legend of Virginia high school soccer whose legacy will inspire players and coaches for generations to come; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kenneth Robert Krieger as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
