SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 201
Commending Greg May.
Agreed to by the Senate, January 16, 2025
WHEREAS, Greg May, a deputy with the Craig County Sheriff's Office, was injured in the line of duty while attempting to rescue a woman during Hurricane Helene in September 2024; and
WHEREAS, Greg May has more than 12 years of law-enforcement experience and was hired by the Craig County Sheriff's Office as a deputy and animal control officer on October 1, 2018; and
WHEREAS, on September 27, 2024, Greg May was at the Craig County Courthouse in New Castle when a call came in that a woman on Cumberland Gap Road was trapped under debris amid high winds and heavy rain; and
WHEREAS, Greg May responded to the scene and discovered an overturned chicken coop while searching for the woman; and
WHEREAS, Greg May was attempting to move the chicken coop when he was struck by flying debris and knocked unconscious; and
WHEREAS, Greg May sustained multiple serious injuries, including a concussion, a broken jaw, and a severe laceration under his neck, and was transported to Lewis Gale Hospital Montgomery, then to Lewis Gale Medical Center for treatment; and
WHEREAS, Greg May has served the Craig County community with the utmost bravery and dedication and looks forward to returning to his duties after a full recovery; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Greg May hereby be commended for his heroic actions during Hurricane Helene in September 2024; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Greg May as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for his exceptional commitment to serving and protecting the residents of Craig County.
