SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 220
Commending Hampton Roads Transit.
Agreed to by the Senate, January 30, 2025
WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit, a transportation agency serving millions of passengers across the Hampton Roads region every year, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit was formed on October 1, 1999, through the merger of Tidewater Regional Transit and Peninsula Transit, making history as the nation's first voluntary merger of transit agencies; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of Hampton Roads Transit improved connectivity between the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach and exemplified the progress that can be achieved through enhanced regional cooperation; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit enabled the creation of a multi-modal agency that today includes fixed-route bus service, cross-tunnel 757 Express bus service, the Tide light rail, the Elizabeth River Ferry, paratransit, Peninsula commuter services, the VB Wave trolley, Base Express, OnDemand ridesharing, and the TRAFFIX commuter options program; and
WHEREAS, with a great sense of responsibility and purpose, Hampton Roads Transit ensures the reliability, safety, efficiency, and sustainability of its transportation options, improving the quality of life for the region's residents; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit is vital to the success and prosperity of the region and an important part of what makes Hampton Roads a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Hampton Roads Transit hereby be commended on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Hampton Roads Transit as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the agency's contributions to Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth.
