WHEREAS, the York High School baseball team of Yorktown won the Virginia High School League Class 3 state championship on June 8, 2024, at Monticello High School in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, the York Falcons defeated the Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs of Lynchburg by a score of 10–5 to secure the program's first state championship title since 1989; and
WHEREAS, after several lead changes early in the contest, the York Falcons were ahead 6–5 in the top of the sixth inning when Casey Cheaney hit a grand slam, his first home run of the season, that all but sealed the Falcons' victory; and
WHEREAS, the York Falcons were carried throughout the game by the stellar pitching of starter Bobby Holihan and reliever Jack Harmon, who gave up only one hit and one run and struck out five batters over four and one-third innings; and
WHEREAS, the York Falcons' championship win was an exceptional finish for head coach Nick Ham, who had assumed leadership of the program only two years prior; and
WHEREAS, the success of the York Falcons is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire York High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the York High School baseball team hereby be commended for winning the 2024 Virginia High School League Class 3 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the York High School baseball team as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the team's achievement.
