A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new article, designated §30-5A-1, relating to requiring the purpose of a prescription to be clearly stated on the label.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:

ARTICLE 5A. PRESCRIPTION REQUIREMENTS AND LABELING.

§30-5A-1. Statement of medical purpose to be provided with prescribed medications.

(a) When any person licensed under this chapter writes or issues a prescription for medication to be self-administered by a client or patient, the person shall indicate the purpose for the medication in a brief statement in simple words, such as "for pain," "for heart care," or "for blood pressure."

(b) Every pharmacy registered in this state shall ensure that the purpose for a medication, as specified by the prescriber, shall appear on the label issued with that medication in large, easy-to-read lettering.

 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to require that prescription medications be clearly labeled for the consumer with a simple statement of the purpose from the prescriber.
