A RESOLUTION
supporting the designation of the marine corps air station yuma as the primary site for basing and training marine corps f-35 joint strike fighter squadrons.

Whereas, local community governments have actively supported the United States Department of Defense military missions at the Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) Yuma; and
Whereas, MCAS Yuma is one of the Marine Corps' premier training bases with a primary mission to provide aviation ranges, support facilities and services that enable Marine Corps commands, visiting military and interagency forces to enhance their mission capability and combat readiness; and
Whereas, the Department of Defense has developed a new fighter aircraft, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter; and
Whereas, MCAS Yuma has been selected as a contingent interim F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Pilot Training Center; and
Whereas, MCAS Yuma is being considered as a primary site for basing and training the Marine Corps F-35 Joint Strike Fighter squadrons; and
Whereas, the natural and geographic assets in or near the Yuma community distinguish MCAS Yuma from all other potential training sites for this new aircraft; and
Whereas, its location in the desert southwest and proximity to the Barry M. Goldwater Range and the Chocolate Mountain Range uniquely position MCAS Yuma to provide high quality training in a variety of conditions; and
Whereas, ideal flying weather, hundreds of miles of restricted airspace, large aerial training ranges and lack of encroachment issues will ensure mission viability of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter at MCAS Yuma well into the future; and
Whereas, the Yuma community has strongly and vigorously supported the MCAS Yuma mission with strong land use planning over many years and recognizes its importance to our state and nation.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:
That the Members of the Senate strongly support the designation of the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma as the primary site for basing and training Marine Corps F-35 Joint Strike Fighter squadrons.
