Pohlman Memorial Interchange. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST ACR 121, as amended, Gomez. Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange. This measure would designate the interchange atState Highway RouteInterstate 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect those signs. Fiscal committee: yes. WHEREAS, Thomas H. Pohlman was a sheriff's deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department; and WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was born on July 8, 1950, and was appointed as a sheriff's deputy on May 29, 1973; and WHEREAS, On April 19, 1978, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was on patrol when he smelled ether, used in the manufacture of the drug PCP, coming from a nearby house. As Deputy Sheriff Pohlman and his partner approached the house, a man bolted from the home. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman pursued the suspect on foot, while his partner went back to the squad car to radio for assistance. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman caught the suspect, and, while the suspect was being handcuffed, the suspect gained control of Deputy Sheriff Pohlman's revolver and shot him. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman died at the scene; and WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman honorably served with the department and bravely gave his life in the service of his community; and WHEREAS, In recognition of Deputy Sheriff Pohlman's commitment and sacrifice while serving and protecting the residents of the County of Los Angeles, it is a fitting tribute to designate the interchange atState Highway RouteInterstate 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the interchange atState Highway RouteInterstate 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange; and be it further Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
