Relative to California Purebred Dog Day.

ACR 223, as introduced, Mathis. California Purebred Dog Day.
This measure would recognize the contributions of purebred dogs to the State of California, and would designate May 1, 2018, as California Purebred Dog Day.

WHEREAS, Purebred dogs are living legacies of the cultures that created them, and historically, purebred dogs worked alongside their families and provided companionship to the family members; and
WHEREAS, The service of purebred dogs continues into today as purebred dogs work alongside humans as guide dogs, service dogs, livestock guardians, search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and canine soldiers serving by the sides of our military men and women; and
WHEREAS, Purebred dogs are often the guardians of their homes and families; and
WHEREAS, Purebred dogs have played important roles in politics, including: Bo Obama, a Portuguese Water Dog; Millie Bush, an English Springer Spaniel; Buddy Clinton, a Labrador Retriever; Rex Reagan, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; and Sutter Brown, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi; and
WHEREAS, Individuals that breed purebred dogs demonstrate exemplary efforts in the breeding practices of healthy and well-socialized purebred dogs; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated and ethical individuals in California breed purebred dogs to develop unique, predictable characteristics that enable dogs to excel in a wide range of beneficial areas; and
WHEREAS, Purebred dog organizations provide veterinary care to purebred dogs and facilitate the placement of purebred dogs into foster homes and loving forever homes with families; and
WHEREAS, All dogs should be valued, whatever their ancestry, breed, or ownership status; and
WHEREAS, Each breed is indelibly etched into the history of the culture that created it as surely as that culture’s music, art, and language; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes and honors the role of purebred dogs serving a large number of purposes in California by observing May 1, 2018, as National Purebred Dog Day, and designating May 1, 2018, as California Purebred Dog Day; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
