150th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34

RECOGNIZING APRIL 29, 2019 AS WORLD WISH DAY IN DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, the mission of Make-A-Wish Delaware is “Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical issues”; and

WHEREAS, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley has granted over 6,681 wishes since inception in 1986; and

WHEREAS, the chapter granted a record breaking 350 wishes in fiscal year 2018; and

WHEREAS, Make-A-Wish Delaware has granted 207 wishes to children in Delaware since 2014; and

WHEREAS, Make-A-Wish Delaware currently has 32 active volunteer Wish Granters throughout the State; and

WHEREAS, World Wish celebrates the anniversary of the birth of the organization, not yet known as Make-A-Wish. The creation of Make-A-Wish was inspired in 1980 by the fulfillment of a wish of 7-year old Chris Greicius, diagnosed with leukemia, who wished to be a policeman for a day. This wish occurred at the end of April 1980; and

WHEREAS, the fulfillment of this wish lead those involved, including Chris’s mother, to continue granting wishes to children who were critically ill. Thus, the Make-A-Wish foundation was formed and has grown to have 60 chapters operating throughout the country and 51 international affiliates on 5 continents; and

WHEREAS, a wish is granted every 34 minutes, on average, somewhere in the U.S. and its territories, and every 17 minutes, on average, somewhere in the world.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 149th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the

Senate concurring therein, that we recognize April 29, 2019 as World Wish Day in Delaware.
