SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 2 AS AMENDED BY SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 1 |
WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly are pleased to recognize and honor successful and talented athletes who, through their magnificent exploits, have established themselves as premier competitors in their respective sports; and
WHEREAS, one such noteworthy person is Jimmie Johnson, who has achieved the highest levels of success in NASCAR, winning an unprecedented fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Dover Delaware is home to Dover International Speedway, the host of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events annually and where Jimmie Johnson has won six times in his career; and
WHEREAS, NASCAR fans from around the world witnessed Jimmie Johnson win the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway on September 26, 2010 in his quest for the NASCAR sprint Cup series Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation has contributed over $3.5 million to various organizations since its inception in 2006 in support of the Foundation's mission to assist children, families and communities in need throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, with the support of NASCAR fans and partners, has helped save tens of thousands of lives through blood collection and by adding individuals to the National Marrow Donor Program RegistryŽ; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to acknowledge and applaud Jimmie Johnson for his accomplishments in NASCAR and outstanding commitment to public service through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation;
NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, with the approval of the Governor, that May 15, 2011 is recognized as "Jimmie Johnson Day" and the people of the State of Delaware are urged to observe the day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
