Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 1920 By Senator Simmons 10-05675A-13 20131920__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution supporting the efforts of the Irish 3 people to arrive at a peaceful solution on the 4 question of reunification. 5 6 WHEREAS, Ireland and its people are an ancient and distinct 7 nation, and 8 WHEREAS, Ireland is an island nation that is composed of 32 9 counties that in the 1920s was artificially divided into a 26 10 county region, the Irish Republic, and a 6-county unit, Northern 11 Ireland, and 12 WHEREAS, this division of the Irish nation was designed to 13 be transitory, and 14 WHEREAS, history has demonstrated that the Irish people 15 have the right and responsibility to govern themselves, and 16 WHEREAS, human and civic rights derive their just powers 17 from the consent of the governed and are best guaranteed by a 18 freely instituted, duly elected, and independent government, and 19 WHEREAS, the Irish Republic is a member of the European 20 Economic Union, and a unified, independent Irish economy is the 21 most effective way for that economy to grow and the most fair 22 and impartial path to extend the benefits of such growth to all 23 Ireland, and 24 WHEREAS, a unified independent Irish society is most likely 25 to provide for the social and practical needs of its people, and 26 WHEREAS, the historic Good Friday Agreement, negotiated 27 with American support and ratified by the British and Irish 28 governments, as well as by vote of the electorate of the entire 29 island of Ireland, includes provisions for achieving a united 30 Ireland through purely democratic and peaceful means, NOW, 31 THEREFORE, 32 33 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 34 35 That we support the efforts of the Irish people to arrive 36 at a peaceful solution to the question of reunification.
