A RESOLUTION


Commending Hands On Atlanta founders Mr. Kent Alexander, Ms. Elise Eplan, and Ms. Michelle Nunn, and inviting them to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in 1989, Mr. Kent Alexander, Ms. Elise Eplan, and Ms. Michelle Nunn envisioned creating an organization to provide volunteer opportunities for people throughout the City of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, for two decades, Hands On Atlanta has served as the connection between the people in need and the people who want to give back, with its core mission of service emphasizing economy, education, and environment; and

WHEREAS, today, Hands On Atlanta serves as a national leader in the volunteer movement and was the inspiration and model for the national volunteer organization, Points of Light and Hands On Network; and

WHEREAS, during Hands On Atlanta's 20 year history, the organization has mobilized more than 250,000 volunteers who have provided more than 1 million hours of service to more than 4,000 nonprofits and schools throughout the greater Atlanta area; and

WHEREAS, Hands On Atlanta has operated the largest AmeriCorps program in the Southeast for the past 16 years, with more than 1,750 members providing tutoring, mentoring, after-school enrichment, and volunteer management services for Atlanta Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, in celebration of its 20 year anniversary, Hands On Atlanta has set its annual goal at raising $500,000 and having volunteers contribute 500,000 hours of service; and

WHEREAS, the foresight and determination of Mr. Alexander, Ms. Eplan, and Ms. Nunn in founding Hands On Atlanta and the selfless and diligent community service its members perform on behalf of others is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr. Kent Alexander, Ms. Elise Eplan, and Ms. Michelle Nunn for their vision and leadership in creating Hands On Atlanta and invite them to appear before the House of Representatives at a date and time designated by the Speaker of the House.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Kent Alexander, Ms. Elise Eplan, and Ms. Michelle Nunn.
