A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Honorable Ray Jenkins; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
and public servants with the passing of Doraville's Mayor Ray Jenkins;
and
WHEREAS,
a native of Doraville, Mayor Jenkins graduated from Chamblee High School and
served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States
Navy, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans with two tours
of duty during the Korean conflict; and
WHEREAS,
after his service to this country in the military, Mayor Jenkins returned home
to Doraville where he embarked on a 32-year career with the United States Postal
Service; and
WHEREAS,
this dedicated public servant was elected to the Doraville City Council in 1974,
was elected mayor in 2003, and was re-elected in 2007; and
WHEREAS,
as a councilman, Mayor Jenkins was instrumental in setting the city's millage
rate at a point when most homeowners paid no city taxes on their residences,
served as a key supporter of the Doraville parks program, and founded the city's
animal control service; and
WHEREAS,
Mayor Jenkins represented Doraville on the DeKalb and Georgia Municipal
Associations since 1974 and was past president of the DeKalb Municipal
Association, the Georgia Municipal Association's fourth district, and Georgia
Municipal Association; and
WHEREAS,
Mayor Jenkins was united in love and marriage to his adoring wife Louella and
was blessed with three remarkable children, Beverly, Karen, and Douglas, and
four wonderful grandchildren, Willie, Brandy, Emily, and Phillip;
and
WHEREAS,
Mayor Jenkins's significant organizational and leadership talents, his
remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivity
to the needs of the citizens of Doraville earned him the respect and admiration
of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mayor Jenkins will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and
friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mayor Ray Jenkins and express
their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mayor Ray Jenkins.
