A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Madison County on the occasion of its bicentennial anniversary;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Madison County, Georgia, was formed on December 5, 1811, and was officially
named after President James Madison; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia's 38th county, Madison County was originally inhabited by Creek and
Cherokee Indians and has been primarily an agricultural county for most of its
history; and
WHEREAS,
Madison County's seat is Danielsville, which was named for General Allen
Daniels, a Revolutionary War hero who donated land for public buildings soon
after the county was established; and
WHEREAS,
the county's most famous native son is Crawford Long, who was born in
Danielsville in 1815 and was the first physician to use sulfuric ether as
anesthesia during surgery; and
WHEREAS,
Madison County is home to Georgia's third oldest church, New Hope Presbyterian
Church, which was established in 1788; and
WHEREAS,
the county shares this state's longest covered bridge, located in Watson Mill
Bridge State Park, with Oglethorpe County; and
WHEREAS,
Madison County's Bicentennial Committee has organized events to honor the
county's 200th anniversary to be held throughout 2011 and include fundraising
events, the construction of a commemorative wall display at the Government
Complex, storytelling events of the county's history, contests, and a fun-filled
festival to be held on September 24, 2011; and
WHEREAS,
the dedicated members of the Bicentennial Committee include Chairperson Rhonda
Wooten, Dianne Anderson, Luanne Byrd, Sandra Webb, Linda Fortson, Dick Perpall,
and Will Mauldin; and
WHEREAS,
on December 5, 2011, at the conclusion of the year-long celebration, a
reenactment of the 1811 commissioners' meeting in full period dress followed by
an elegant reception will be held; and
WHEREAS,
throughout its 200 years, Madison County has been home to many talented and
dedicated men and women who have contributed substantially to the progress and
development of their community, its civic organizations, and the economic
vitality of the state; and
WHEREAS,
Madison County continues to look with optimism toward the future while keeping
the proud memory of its beginning close to its heart to share with succeeding
generations.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Madison County on its distinguished 200 year history and join
with the citizens and officials in celebrating its bicentennial.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Madison
County's Bicentennial Committee.
