RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Glynn Academy on the occasion of its 222nd anniversary; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Glynn Academy was first chartered on February 22, 1788, and has been documented
as the oldest high school in the State of Georgia and is likely the fifth oldest
in this nation; and
WHEREAS,
in 1838, Mayor A.L. King of Brunswick conveyed Hillsboro square to the Trustees
of Glynn Academy and further provided that the proceeds of the city's sale of
"New Town" were to be used for the construction of the Old Glynn Academy
building, which is known today as Glynn Academy's Alumni Hall; and
WHEREAS,
in 1889, the Glynn Academy Annex building, designed by Alfred S. Eichenberg, was
erected under a commission by Glynn County's school board and was intended to
replace the old wooden structure from 1883; and
WHEREAS,
constructed by Georgia West Point Iron Works as a tribute to local veterans of
World War I, Glynn Academy's main building is known as Memorial Hall and is
considered to be one of the most beautiful school buildings in Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
since its inception, Glynn Academy has been a leader in education, providing
students with a high quality education and preparing graduates to lead the State
of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Glynn Academy has been cultivating the minds of future leaders and prominent
citizens for 222 years, and the dedication of the school's faculty, staff,
students, and founders are worthy of recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
the rich history and tradition of Glynn Academy; congratulate its faculty,
staff, students, and alumni on the occasion of its 222nd anniversary; and extend
their warmest best wishes for its continued growth and success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Glynn Academy.
