A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Glynn Academy on the occasion of its 222nd anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Glynn Academy was first chartered on February 22, 1788, and has been documented as the oldest high school in the State of Georgia and is likely the fifth oldest in this nation; and

WHEREAS, in 1838, Mayor A.L. King of Brunswick conveyed Hillsboro square to the Trustees of Glynn Academy and further provided that the proceeds of the city's sale of "New Town" were to be used for the construction of the Old Glynn Academy building, which is known today as Glynn Academy's Alumni Hall; and

WHEREAS, in 1889, the Glynn Academy Annex building, designed by Alfred S. Eichenberg, was erected under a commission by Glynn County's school board and was intended to replace the old wooden structure from 1883; and

WHEREAS, constructed by Georgia West Point Iron Works as a tribute to local veterans of World War I, Glynn Academy's main building is known as Memorial Hall and is considered to be one of the most beautiful school buildings in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, since its inception, Glynn Academy has been a leader in education, providing students with a high quality education and preparing graduates to lead the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Glynn Academy has been cultivating the minds of future leaders and prominent citizens for 222 years, and the dedication of the school's faculty, staff, students, and founders are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the rich history and tradition of Glynn Academy; congratulate its faculty, staff, students, and alumni on the occasion of its 222nd anniversary; and extend their warmest best wishes for its continued growth and success.
