A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Bishop Eddie L. Long; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Bishop Eddie L. Long answered his first call to the service of the Lord at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church of Lithonia, Georgia, in 1987; and

WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Bishop Long earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from North Carolina Central University, a Master of Divinity degree from Atlanta's Interdenominational Theological Society, and a doctorate in pastoral ministry from the International College of Excellence in Tampa, Florida; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership and guidance, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church has expanded to new heights, allowing it to spread the Word of God to more people with construction of a 3,700 seat sanctuary, a 10,000 seat complex, and the Family Life Center; and

WHEREAS, a man of leadership and compassion, Bishop Long actively serves his community through his work with the Morehouse School of Religion Board of Directors, the Board of Visitors for Emory University, the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees, the Young Life Board of Trustees, the Fort Valley State University Board of Trustees, the Safehouse Outreach Ministries Board of Directors, and 100 Black Men of America; and

WHEREAS, named one of America's 125 most influential leaders, Bishop Long has also been honored for his changes to the world of ministry with such awards as the 2003 Leadership Award, the Faith/Community Award from 100 Black Men of America, the 2003 Religious Contemporary Award from IRC, and the Champion Award for Spiritual Enlightenment from All Children Are Special, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, some of Bishop Long's other numerous honors include the Mentor of the Year Award from Omega Psi Phi fraternity and an Emmy award for The Face of Homelessness, and he has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control for his tireless efforts fighting HIV/AIDS; and

WHEREAS, this noted author is united in love and marriage to his wife, Vanessa, and the couple has been blessed with four remarkable children, Eric, Edward, Jared, and Taylor; and

WHEREAS, the unmatched spiritual assistance offered by Bishop Long is a source of strength, inspiration, and direction for persons in all walks of life and from all economic strata, and he serves as an inspiration to countless Georgians and Americans each day with his acts of kindness and compassion.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Bishop Eddie L. Long for his unparalleled record of community service and his innumerable good works rendered on behalf of persons in need and extend to him their most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Bishop Eddie L. Long.
