A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Donald Eugene Harwood; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Donald Eugene Harwood on December 10, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eugene Harwood was born on November 7, 1931, in Chatfield, Minnesota, a beloved son of Archie and Susan Campion Harwood; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, he was united in marriage to his former wife, Joan Powers Harwood, and blessed with one remarkable son, William Bradford Harwood, and one wonderful grandson, Adrian Bradford Harwood; and

WHEREAS, he leaves behind his beloved companion of many years, Telia Long, and her three devoted daughters, Pam Yanner, Kim Mathews, and Patty Murphy; and

WHEREAS, Don graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism and rose to the position of general manager of the Savannah Morning News and Savannah Evening Press; and

WHEREAS, he was a man highly involved with his community by serving as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and the Airport Commission, serving on the boards of the Savannah Yacht Club, American Heart Association, and Hospital Authority, and joining the Rotary Club, American Red Cross of Savannah, the YMCA, and Boy Scouts of America; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family, friends, and co-workers were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Don Harwood will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal brother, father, son, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Donald Eugene Harwood and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Donald Eugene Harwood.
