A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO TUITION WAIVERS.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§304A-    Tuition waivers; spouses and children of eligible veterans.  (a)  The University of Hawaii and the community colleges of the State may waive tuition to any qualified student that is a spouse or child of:

     (1)  A totally disabled veteran; or

     (2)  An active or reserve member of the armed forces or national guard member who lost his or her life while engaged in active federal military or naval service; provided that upon remarriage, the surviving spouse of the veteran or national guard member shall no longer be eligible for the tuition waiver under this section.

     For purposes of this section, "totally disabled veteran" means a person who is totally disabled due to injuries received while on duty with the armed forces of the United States.

     (b)  The University of Hawaii may adopt rules pursuant to chapter 91 for purposes of implementing this section."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
