URGING THE President and the CONGRESS of the united states TO CONTINUE THE PRESIDENT'S MALARIA INITIATIVE.

WHEREAS, according to the latest World Health Organization's estimates published in December, 2016, there were 212,000,000 cases of malaria worldwide in 2016 and malaria caused 429,000 deaths – mostly of children under the age of five in Sub-Saharan Africa; and

WHEREAS, the United States President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), launched in 2005 by President George W. Bush, had the goal to reduce malaria deaths by half in fifteen high-burden countries in Sub-Sahara Africa, proved to be successful, and led to the initiative's expansion under President Barack Obama to the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Jaycees, United States Junior Chamber, and the Junior Chamber International have made continued United States support of the PMI a priority in 2017; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature supports the efforts of the Hawaii Jaycees, United States Junior Chamber, and the Junior Chamber International in requesting the President and the Congress to continue to support the PMI to battle malaria around the world; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, each member of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, the President of the Hawaii Jaycees, the President of the United States Junior Chamber, and the President of the Junior Chamber International.
