HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
Urging the governor, Board of education, and the Hawaii state teachers association to establish a minimum median salary, adjusted for the cost of living, that is not the lowest in the nation among METROPOLITAN areas.
WHEREAS, according to a recent study by the MacIver Institute, teachers in Honolulu have the lowest median salary of the sixty major metropolitan areas in the United States, adjusted for cost of living; and
WHEREAS, over half of all new-arriving teachers in Hawaii leave their district within the first five years on the job; and
WHEREAS, many teachers in Hawaii can move to many cities on the mainland to receive a higher salary in a place with a lower cost of living; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's high cost of living is often cited as a reason many teachers move to the mainland; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Governor, Board of Education, and the Hawaii State Teachers Association are urged to establish a minimum median salary, adjusted for the cost of living, that is not the lowest in the nation among metropolitan areas; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the President of the Hawaii State Teachers Association, the
Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Education.
