HOUSE RESOLUTION
recognizing, commending, and expressing a heartfelt mahalo to brian mccafferty for his service and dedication to the people of maui county and the state of hawaii.
WHEREAS, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY has spent a lifetime tirelessly helping the people of Maui through his various professional, entrepreneurial, and volunteer roles, and has thereby made an immeasurable impact on the people whose lives he touched; and
WHEREAS, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY moved to Hawaii in 1970 and immediately started contributing to the community and economy by opening "Crazy Shirts" stores in Maui and California, and between 1974-1980, he opened t-shirt concessions on Oahu at Ala Moana Center, Kahala Mall, Pearlridge Mall, and the International Marketplace; after maintaining businesses on Maui and Oahu, he moved back to Maui in 1980 where he owned and operated Island Screen-print Company in Pa‘ia until 1995; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY responded to concerns from his community regarding traditional shoreline access and founded Ho‘omana‘o Maui (Cause to Remember), working with community members throughout Maui and Hawai‘i Island to advocate for the preservation of traditional shoreline access trails in accordance with the Hawaiian Highways Act of 1893, and traveling to Honolulu to do research and testify at the Hawai‘i State Legislature; and
WHEREAS, out of concern for the youth in his community BRIAN MCCAFFERTY co-founded the Pa‘ia Youth and Cultural Center in 1993, then continued his service to youth by founding Teens On Call – a paid work skills training program under the fiscal sponsorship of The Salvation Army in 1994; after years of
success in the community, the Teens On Call program came under the fiscal sponsorship of Tri-Isle RC&D Council, Inc. in 2010; with their support and his dedication, Teens On Call works with community partners to provide project-based work skills training programs for youth, ages 13-19; and
WHEREAS, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY personifies the Teens On Call's mission: "To assist development of an honest work ethic among interested students via paid work skills training projects/assignments which involve task completion, improved focus, teamwork, vocational skills, and encourage good character values;" leading by example, "Uncle Brian" is at every Teens On Call project working alongside the youth participants doing the same work, offering guidance and words of wisdom along the way, always with a smile on his face and pure aloha in his heart; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY worked with the Hawaii State Department of Transportation, Transportation Security Administration (at Kahului Airport), and the hotel industry to start the Visitor Industry Recycling Program, which with the help of Teens On Call, has generated $250,000 in cash and kept two million pounds of reusable/recyclable items out of the landfills to date; and
WHEREAS, BRIAN MCCAFFERTY's service and dedication have led to his participation and appointment to boards and commissions across the State: Mayor's Advisory Council on Beach Access (1992 – Maui County), Maui Cultural Resources Commission (1992-1994), founding member of the Maui County Commission on Children & Youth (1996), and the Family Court – Community Service Sentencing Program - Hawai‘i State Judiciary- First Circuit (1997 – Present); now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby recognizes, commends, and expresses its heartfelt mahalo to BRIAN MCCAFFERTY for his countless hours of service and dedication to communities across Maui County and the ripple effect it has had on the entire State
of Hawaii, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
