HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING THE SERVICE AND SACRIFICE OF OUTSTANDING VIETNAM VETERANS AND COMMEMORATING THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LANDING OF UNITED STATES GROUND TROOPS IN THE VIETNAM WAR.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, BRIGADIER GENERAL JEROME T. HAGEN enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1952 during the Korean War, received training in "Boot Camp" and served as a drill instructor at the San Diego Recruit Depot; completed the Officer Candidate Screening Course, earning the rank of Second Lieutenant; flew four hundred eighty-three combat missions in A4 "Skyhawk" aircraft during the Vietnam War, earning the Silver Star Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and numerous other medals, citations and decorations; and retired as a Brigadier General after thirty years of loyal, distinguished, and patriotic service; and

 

     WHEREAS, COLONEL STEVE "VIKING" MELGAARD played football for the University of Michigan, graduating from that University through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, earning the rank of Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps; completed KC-130 training, reported to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Da Nang, Vietnam in January of 1971; flew the KC-130, C-117D, and TA-4J aircraft, completing thirty-four combat missions; and retired as an O-6 Colonel, otherwise known as a "full bird" Colonel, in 1990; and

 

     WHEREAS, WHEREAS, LT. COLONEL GRADY GESKE grew up in Wisconsin, graduated from college, entered the Marine Corps, become a Marine Corps helicopter pilot, served as a Cruise Missile Engineer, saw duty "in all climes & places", served two combat tours in Viet Nam, served two Mediterranean Carrier deployments, served various other deployments (in Asia, Australia, Cuba, and Central America), retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, and now lives on Oahu as a family man and neighbor who wants to help others; and

 

     WHEREAS, WHEREAS, CAPTAIN KENNETH H. DEHOFF, JR. was raised in Phoenix, Arizona and Salt Lake City, Utah, and engaged in the sports of basketball, swimming, and skiing; attended Skyline High School, American Legion Boys State and Dixie College; joined the Army and attended Ft. Benning for Officer Candidate School as well as helicopter flight school in Texas, Alabama, and Georgia; received orders to serve in Vietnam and reported to C Troop 16th Air Cav, located in Plekue in 1970, and then moved to Bien Tue; was shot down a number of times, finally crashing at the hands of an anti-aircraft battalion; received the Air Medal, Purple Hearts and Good Conduct wards; and retired as a Captain; and

 

     WHEREAS, SERGEANT MAJOR ALAN KELLOGG, as a staff Sergeant, was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, in December, 1967, serving as a squad leader with M-16 Special Task Group Command, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines; served as a platoon sergeant; served as platoon commander of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines; returned for his second tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam in December, 1969; served briefly as a platoon sergeant with Company A, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines; was reassigned duty during March, 1970 as a platoon sergeant of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, and 1st Marine Division;  earned a Medal of Honor due to his heroic actions on March 11, 1970; was wounded in action in Quango Nam Province on May 8, 1970 and was evacuated to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, Japan; and retired as a Sergeant Major in 1990; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the landing of United States ground troops in the Vietnam War; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that this body hereby expresses its utmost gratitude to all Vietnam veterans, and especially to BRIGADIER GENERAL JEROME T. HAGEN, COLONEL STEVE "VIKING" MELGAARD, LT. COLONEL GRADY GESKE, CAPTAIN KENNETH H. DEHOFF, JR., and SERGEANT MAJOR ALAN KELLOGG for their years of dedication and service to the United States.
