HOUSE RESOLUTION
ENCOURAGING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO PLAN FOR THE REVITALIZATION AND REMODELING OF HANS L'ORANGE PARK.
WHEREAS, in 1924, Oahu Sugar Company manager, Hans L'Orange, convinced the company to allow sugar workers to use several acres of company land for a recreational area; and
WHEREAS, that recreational area later became open to the public, and in 1972 the area was renamed Hans L'Orange Park; and
WHEREAS, Hans L'Orange Park has been home to games for the Waipahu High School Marauders and Hawaii Pacific University Sharks baseball teams, the Americans of Japanese Ancestry and Hawaii Winter Baseball leagues, and other teams and leagues; and
WHEREAS, Hans L'Orange Park is currently underused and requires remodeling and revitalization to restore it to its former beauty; and
WHEREAS, residents and visitors have expressed concerns about the poor restroom facilities, dirty and uncomfortable bleachers, the lack of netting to prevent baseballs from hitting vehicles in the parking lot, and the overall condition of the park; and
WHEREAS, improvements to the historic Hans L'Orange Park would encourage families, organizations, and visitors to use the park for gatherings and other activities; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the City and County of Honolulu is encouraged to plan for the revitalization and remodeling of Hans L'Orange Park; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that city officials are encouraged to seek input from local residents regarding specific appropriate improvements to Hans L'Orange Park; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor, Chair of the City Council, Director of Parks and Recreation, Director of Design and Construction, and Director of Facility Maintenance of the City and County of Honolulu.
