HOUSE RESOLUTION
Proclaiming 2010 as the year of ethnic studies in hawaii.
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, which began in 1970 as an experimental two-year program, is observing its fortieth anniversary; and
WHEREAS, the program became a department in 1995, offering a bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies; and
WHEREAS, several state legislators, including Roland Kotani, Clayton Hee, Dwight Takamine, Brian Taniguchi, and Roy Takumi, have been lecturers or teaching assistants in Ethnic Studies; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies faculty have made substantial contributions to scholarship on Native Hawaiians and other island ethnic groups, as well as the society and culture of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department has attained national recognition for its research and publications on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department has attained an international reputation for the work of its faculty in increasing awareness of the ongoing devastating effects of racial and ethnic conflicts and in opposing racism and discrimination in all forms; and
WHEREAS, students majoring in and studying Ethnic Studies have provided countless hours of community service to the people of Hawaii during the past forty years; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies faculty maintains a research and teaching philosophy that emphasizes praxis, the application of scholarship to the complex issues of our local communities; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department provides students with interdisciplinary analyses of social problems, issues, and policies that have an impact on peoples who have been affected by racism in national, transnational, and global contexts, with a particular emphasis in Hawaii, the Pacific, and the continental United States; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department founded the Ah Quon McElrath Fund for Social Change to honor and support the vision and perspectives of Ah Quon McElrath through annual activities to educate students and the community about progressive social change and justice; and
WHEREAS, the Ethnic Studies Department has planned a year-long series of activities to commemorate its fortieth anniversary; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that 2010 is proclaimed the Year of Ethnic Studies in Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be sent to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, the President of the University of Hawaii, the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Dean of the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
